Should I Grade My Pokémon Card?
Professional grading can multiply your card's value — but only if the numbers work. This guide tells you exactly when grading makes financial sense in 2026, what to expect from PSA vs CGC vs BGS, and how to pre-screen your cards for free before spending on submission fees.
The $50 Rule — Start Here
⚡ Only grade cards worth $50+ in raw condition
PSA charges $35 per card plus ~$25 in shipping both ways. That's $60 minimum before you even count insurance. Your card needs to be worth significantly more after grading just to break even. Cards under $50 raw almost never justify grading fees.
This is the single most important rule in 2026. Most beginners waste hundreds of dollars submitting $10-20 cards hoping for a big grade. The math never works. Use our free ROI calculator to run the numbers on any card before you submit.
What Grade Will My Card Get?
Most cards don't grade as high as collectors expect. Here's the honest breakdown of what to expect and what it means for value:
| PSA Grade | Condition | Value Multiplier | Worth Grading? |
| PSA 10 | Gem Mint — perfect | 4-10x raw | ✓ Always |
| PSA 9 | Mint — near perfect | 2-3x raw | ✓ Usually |
| PSA 8 | Near Mint-Mint | 1.4-1.8x raw | ⚠ Sometimes |
| PSA 7 | Near Mint | 1.1-1.3x raw | ✗ Rarely |
| PSA 6 or below | Excellent or lower | 0.8-1.0x raw | ✗ Never |
The brutal truth is that a PSA 6 or 7 card often sells for less than the same card raw. Grading at these grades literally destroys value. Pre-screen your card before you spend anything.
PSA vs CGC vs BGS in 2026
PSA — Best for resale value
PSA holds 67% market share and commands the highest premiums. A PSA 10 typically sells for 10-20% more than an equivalent CGC 10. Best choice for high-value vintage cards and modern holos you plan to sell. Costs $35/card, turnaround ~45 days.
CGC — Best for speed and budget
CGC has captured 25% market share and is the fastest growing grader. Costs $20/card with ~18 day turnaround. CGC 10s sell for around 85% of PSA 10 prices — still very profitable for most cards. Best for modern cards and UK/EU collectors.
BGS — Best for sub-grades
BGS offers detailed centering, corners, edges and surface sub-grades. BGS Black Label (perfect across all categories) is extremely prestigious. However BGS 9.5s sell for only ~83% of PSA 10 equivalents. Best for collectors who want transparency over maximum resale value.
The Pre-Grading Checklist
Before spending money on any submission, check your card against these criteria:
✅
Centering — borders should be 55/45 or better front, 75/25 back for PSA 9. Measure with a ruler if unsure.
✅
Corners — no whitening or fraying visible under bright light. Even one touched corner usually means PSA 8 at best.
✅
Edges — no chips, nicks or rough texture along all four edges. Run your fingernail lightly along each edge.
✅
Surface — no scratches, print lines or haze on the holo. Check under angled light — scratches invisible straight-on show clearly at 45 degrees.
✅
Raw value — confirm the card is worth $50+ raw on TCGPlayer or eBay sold listings right now.
✅
Population check — if PSA has graded thousands of this card already, the premium may be smaller. Check psacard.com pop reports.
When NOT to Grade
- Card is worth under $50 raw
- Obvious corner whitening or edge chips visible
- Card has been played or stored in a binder without sleeves
- PSA population is already very high (thousands of copies graded)
- You need the money from selling it quickly — grading takes months
- It's a common card that only has sentimental value to you
